Global Nomads Group (“GNG”)
Global Nomads Group is a nonprofit that creates educational, technology-based programs designed to build a generation of youth who are empathetic, globally aware, and taking positive action in their communities. Since 1998, they’ve reached more than one million students in 60 countries on all seven continents.
STUDENT TO WORLD 2020Overview: Student to World is an online educational program for young people ages 12-18 years old. Rooted in youth storytelling, Student to World allows youth to learn about a global theme through activities, media resources, and stories created by youth from around the world. By participating in Student to World, youth explore aspects of their everyday lives, compare and contrast their lives with the lives of global peers, expand their understanding of thematic content in a global context, and ultimately plan to take actions that benefit their local and global communities.
Timeframe: The program is designed to be very flexible and allows the learner to set the pace at which he/she completes the activities. Each of the four modules takes 3-4 hours to complete depending on learner age and learning level. The learner can decide when and how much she engages in the program each week - for example, she can spend an hour each day across 2-3 weeks on the course activities or choose to only complete activities a few days a week and spread it out over a couple of months.
Course structure: Each theme-based course has four modules. Each module includes instructions and invites youth to learn about a global theme through a brief mini-lesson, by exploring curated global media resources, by reading stories written by other global youth participants, and by completing a story-writing assignment themselves (these stories are added to the global youth story library). All themes align to Asia Society Global Competencies, 21st Century Skills, The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning’s (CASEL) standards, UN Sustainable Development Goals, and either the Next Generation Science Standards or the National Arts Standards.
Technology: Every learner needs a device and reliable internet access to participate in this web-based program.
Participation in Student to World includes access to:
- Private Online Learning Platform: GNG creates customized courses using the Canvas Learning Management System which is certified to meet Federal privacy standards (FERPA). All courses are private and only accessible GNG registered participants. Student data is retained only for the active participating year.
- Learning content: Learners will have access to all three global themes. Youth can choose to complete only one theme or select all three to complete. All of the introductory videos, activities, resources, and assignments are online.
- Facilitator Guide: All three global themes include a Facilitator Guide that will be shared with parents/guardians of registered youth. While the online program includes instructions for the learner so that they can guide themselves through the experience, parents/guardians can use the guide to support their child(ren) through the program.
PARENT/GUARDIAN RESPONSIBILITIESTo ensure your child(ren) have an amazing global learning experience, please:
- Ensure your child(ren) have read and commit to the Code of Conduct.
- Help your child(ren) log onto the online platform the first time and become oriented to the platform.
- Support your child(ren) if needed using the Facilitator Guide;
- Reach out to our staff with questions or concerns;
- Abide by the other terms and covenants contained in the Participation Agreement attached hereto as Exhibit A.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSHow can parents, guardians and learners access the program and will there be assistance?
Access to the Student to World online courses (all global themes) will be made available to learners immediately upon program registration. Learners will receive an email directing them to their online username and password to access all global themes. Each global theme course provides an introductory video to prepare learners for the activities and assignments. Parents/guardians will receive a separate email containing all three Educator Guides and GNG contact information should they have any questions or require support.
What are the course components?
Each global theme consists of four modules, each with a module introduction, mini lessons, curated media resources, stories written by previous global youth participants (ages 12-18 years old), and assignment instructions.
What support should parents/guardians and learners expect throughout the program?
Student to World is designed specifically for learners to navigate through the program on their own. Tools such as introductory videos and online platform reminders are provided in each global theme to support the learner’s progress towards successful completion. Learners can also opt in to connect in a facilitated video call led by GNG staff to discuss the activities, share questions, and engage in group reflection. Should you or your learner need additional support, you can reach out via email. GNG staff will respond to any emails promptly (typically within 2 days max).
In what language is Student to World conducted?
All activities, global youth stories, and assignments are in English requiring learners to have intermediate English proficiency.
What is the cost of participation in Student to World?
Participation in GNG’s online program, Student to World, is presently offered at no cost to learners or parents/guardians. GNG reserves the right to charge for future programs.
What are the technology requirements for a young person to participate in the Student to World Program?
Please see the attached Exhibit B for the technology requirements for learners to participate in the Student to World program.
